THE WHITE SHIRT – 5 WAYS TO WORK IT

Your work wardrobe planning just got a whole lot easier.

A classic item in every working girls wardrobe is the crisp, button up white shirt. Whether it’s fitted, oversized, short or long sleeve - it’s easy to make it work for you every day of the week. Here’s how to give it new life.

Tucked or untucked – both are so versatile and work for a variety of shapes and sizes. Tuck yours in, like Victoria Beckham, to a full, voluminous skirt. This creates an hourglass shape with a cinched waist. Roll up the sleeves for a relaxed feel, both flats and heels work with this look. Have an oversize shirt? Leave it untucked over skinny pants to balance out the bigger shape up top, or show some skin with tailored shorts. Tuck in to cigarette pants and add a jacket for a polished finish or loosely tuck into a draped pair with a cropped length for easy chic.

Accessories can instantly update any white shirt. Layer a statement necklace over your buttoned up shirt, or undo some buttons and let your jewels shine through. Rolled up sleeves highlight a beautiful watch or ring while a simple necklace or choker creates a minimal feel. If you love a feminine twist to your look pull your hair back and add a jewelled earring, go big for more impact!

Layering isn’t just for winter. You can wear your button down shirt under a light knit, pull down the hem and keep your collar out. This look works with wide leg and slim pants and is great with a pencil or flare hem skirt. In the cooler months layer with a heavier knit, jacket and coat draped on the shoulders. Wear a killer heel to balance the masculine tailoring. Layer your shirt under your favourite dress and update a strapless shape with a full skirt for the office. Tunics and narrow strap necklines are also on trend.

Wear your old belts in a new way. A huge trend from the runways is the corset belt worn over a shirt, as seen at Chanel. If the corset look is too much for you or your workplace, wear a wide belt over your shirt, or even over a shirt and knit to achieve the same high-end vibe. This is a great silhouette for straight body types to create shape through the waist and hip. Wear a narrow belt low on your hips with a tailored pant and lace up brogues for tomboy cool or try an all white ensemble with an earthy tan colour belt.

TGIF! Everyone’s favourite day Friday just became cooler. Wear a man-style shirt over flared or skinny jeans and add a pop of colour with a heel. Try yours with a longline sleeveless jacket, some cropped pants and flats – be confident and add a hat for a fun look. Throw on a blazer with denim bottoms and add a heel for leg length or keep it casual with a sneaker so you can run out the door ready for the weekend!
